Inspiré par le philosophe Vilém Flusser – qui a questionné l’histoire des images et leur processus de création – ou encore par certains artistes – comme Joan Fontcuberta – qui ont travaillé sur la « vérité » de la photographie, sur sa capacité à représenter le réel, Lionel Bayol-Thémines fabrique des images singulières qui interrogent la capacité de la photographie numérique à générer d’autres « réalités ». L’artiste revendique également la dimension matérielle des images, en élaborant des dispositifs qui sont de véritables sculptures photographiques. Lionel Bayol-Thémines expérimente la représentation du paysage via le logiciel Google Earth et l’impact de l’intelligence artificielle sur la représentation de notre espace de vie. Les préoccupations de son travail sont d’explorer, de documenter ces modélisations virtuelles, d’interroger la diffusion des images et les programmes qui les génèrent.

Lionel Bayol-Thémines présente une installation immersive issue de la série Generated / AI / Particle Science Photographs et des images de la série Generated / AI / Art Science with machines. Ces travaux sont issus d’une performance collaborative avec un réseau neuronal (IA) auquel est soumise en continu la même phrase pendant plusieurs jours consécutifs en modifiant seulement une des variables. Plusieurs milliers d’images ont été ainsi créées dont une sélection a été gardée. Pour extended, l’artiste propose une mise en séquence inédite de ces imagess, provoquant ainsi un nouveau regard sur le travail.

Qu’est-ce qui fait œuvre dans les séries “Generated / AI” de Lionel Bayol-Thémines ? Tout d’abord, il y a le genre que ce dernier a tenté d’épuiser, celui de la photographie scientifique que pratiquent les non-artistes que sont les chercheuses et chercheurs pour valider leurs théories avec des images qui finissent par intégrer les collections de musées des sciences ou d’art. Lionel Bayol-Thémines a réitéré la même expérience des milliers de fois à quelques détails linguistiques près, une répétition qui convoque les savoir-faire artistiques. Mais surtout, il a édité la myriade d’images de son corpus art et science pour n’en préserver que les plus impactantes, comme le font les photographes, ce qu’il a été, et il est important de le rappeler. Le résultat est saisissant: des séries s’inscrivant dans un imaginaire scientifique où la beauté magnifie des phénomènes que l’on ne saurait interpréter. Quand l’imagination artificielle fait place à celle des spectatrices et spectateurs pour qui ces images d’un nouveau genre semblent pourtant si familières. Des images dont le propos textuel a été ciselé par la répétition pour que le regard affiné de l’artiste nous en présente la quintessence.

Inspired by the philosopher Vilém Flusser—who questioned the history of images and their creation processes—and by artists such as Joan Fontcuberta, who worked on the «truth» of photography and its capacity to represent reality, Lionel Bayol-Thémines creates distinctive images that challenge the ability of digital photography to generate alternative «realities.» The artist also emphasizes the material dimension of images, crafting installations that are true photographic sculptures. Lionel Bayol-Thémines explores landscape representation via Google Earth software and the impact of Artificial Intelligence on how we depict our living spaces. His work seeks to explore and document these virtual modelings while questioning the dissemination of images and the algorithms that generate them.

Lionel Bayol-Thémines presents an immersive installation from the series Generated / AI / Particle Science Photographs and images from the series Generated / AI / Art Science with Machines. These works stem from a collaborative performance with a neural network (AI), which was continuously fed the same sentence for several consecutive days, with only one variable altered. Thousands of images were created in this way, from which a selection has been kept. For extended, the artist offers a unique sequential arrangement of these images, thereby inviting a new perspective on his work.

What constitutes «art» in the Generated / AI series by Lionel Bayol-Thémines? First, there is the genre he has sought to exhaust—the scientific photography practiced by non-artists such as researchers, who use images to validate their theories, images that eventually find their way into science or art museum collections. Bayol-Thémines repeated the same experiment thousands of times, with only slight linguistic variations, a repetition that invokes artistic expertise. But most importantly, he curated the multitude of images from his art and science corpus, preserving only the most impactful ones, just as photographers do—a profession he once held, and which is crucial to remember. The result is striking: series that belong to a scientific imagination where beauty elevates phenomena that are difficult to interpret. When artificial imagination gives way to the imagination of the viewers, these new kinds of images seem strangely familiar. The textual basis has been refined through repetition so that the artist’s sharpened gaze presents us with their very essence.

Scientifique de formation, Lionel Bayol-Thémines est diplômé de l’ENSP-Arles. Il est résident de la Fondation nationale des artistes et enseigne la photographie à L’ESADHaR de Rouen. En 2018 son projet “Flux Scape“, a été retenu pour la commande photographique nationale «Flux une société en mouvement » Ministère de la Culture, CNAP. En 2019 son projet “After Nadar“ a été retenu pour la commande photographique de la Mission Photographique du Grand Est. De 2019 à 2021 il est invité par l’université de Strasbourg pour la résidence Supplementary elements qui est à l’origine du projet “Low Space Oddity“ initié avec le Centre de Documentation Spatiale de Strasbourg (CDS). Son travail a été exposé par de nombreuses institutions, notamment à la Bnf à Paris en 2023, à l’Arsenal à Metz en 2022, au FRAC Rouen Normandie en 2020, au Korea International Photo Festival, Séoul (Corée) en 2019, entre autres.

A scientist by training, Lionel Bayol-Thémines graduated from the ENSP-Arles. He is a resident of the Fondation nationale des artistes and teaches photography at ESADHaR in Rouen. In 2018, his project «Flux Scape» was selected for the national photographic commission «Flux, a Society in Motion» by the Ministry of Culture and CNAP. In 2019, his project «After Nadar» was selected for the photographic commission of the Mission Photographique du Grand Est. From 2019 to 2021, he was invited by the University of Strasbourg for the «Supplementary Elements» residency, which led to the «Low Space Oddity» project initiated with the Centre de Documentation Spatiale de Strasbourg (CDS). His work has been exhibited by numerous institutions, including the BnF in Paris in 2023, the Arsenal in Metz in 2022, the FRAC Rouen Normandie in 2020, and at the Korea International Photo Festival in Seoul (South Korea) in 2019, among others.
