Seconde nature

As a child, Bertrand Hugues was already immersed in contemplating the details of nature, the minutely ephemeral. The camera, along with slow, precise and thoughtful gestures, later helped him to capture and freeze these fleeting moments. Perspective and focus are witnesses to the decision making that the artist brings to the final work. Influenced by the poetry and compositions of the surrealist period, Bertrand Hugues works on sculpture and form using materials that he stages like a set designer.

With Seconde nature, Bertrand Hugues presents his personal interpretation of innocuous plant elements, in the manner of “plant chimeras” (Pierre Watt). Rigorously constructed abstract works, which present new forms without revealing all their trade secrets. The encounter with Michel Fresson was decisive in the choice of processing, carefully chosen for its pictorial properties.

After graduating from Efet (1987), Bertrand Hugues first specialized as a commercial photographer. Notable among his numerous exhibitions are his dual shows with François Weil at the Sabine Puget Gallery and with Marinette Cueco at the Univers Gallery (2018), along with several solo exhibitions, at the Eye See Gallery in Brussels (2000), the Berthet-Aittouarès Gallery (2015), at Parallax Gallery in Aix en Provence (2019) and at the Eric Mouchet Gallery in 2021.

Galerie Eric Mouchet

An art dealer and collector for over 20 years, Eric Mouchet opened a gallery in Saint-Germain-des-Prés in 2014 dedicated to contemporary art and emerging artists. The gallery also produces exhibitions and books on modern art and renowned artists such as Le Corbusier, Eikoh Hosoe, Hudinilson Jr. or Robert Mapplethorpe. These two facets constitute the foundations of Galerie Eric Mouchet’s philosophy and are an integral part of its identity, allowing it to consider and support emerging artists and their productions.
