Dings & Shadows & Crush & Pull
To the question “What is a 21st century photograph?”, Carey answers by partnering the 19th century photogram with 20th century Polaroid’s instant technology. “What do these two have in common?” Her answer: the negative! Crush & Pull thus combines Polaroid and photogram using the Polaroid negative to create new abstract forms and blended hues with experimental approaches and innovative process-driven methods located in chemistry-laden Polaroid “pods” and the “light-tight” color darkroom. Dings & Shadows names Carey’s color photogram series, she purposely removes the object-as-referent found in the historical photogram between light and light-sensitive color photographic paper. She breaks with historical traditions and borrows photographic terms; her “ding" - professional no-no and taboo - is “blown-up” acting as her “shadow” catcher.
Galerie Miranda presents Carey's landmark series Dings & Shadows - color photograms - alongside an exclusive presentation of her newest work entitled Crush & Pull, a Polaroid 20 X 24 color triptych - all unique.
Ellen Carey’s work has been the subject of 60 one-person exhibitions and seen in hundreds of group exhibitions, found in the permanent collections of art and photography museums: The Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Amon Carter Museum of American Art, George Eastman Museum, Norton Museum of Art, Wadsworth Atheneum, New Britain Museum of American Art, Museum at the Chicago Art Institute, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of Art, Vassar College, Yale University Art Gallery and Centre Pompidou and Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BNF) in Paris. Corporate and private collections include JP Morgan Chase Collection, The LeWitt Foundation and the Sir Elton John Collection. In November 2020, her work will feature in the upcoming exhibition organized by the Bibliothèque Nationale de France at the Grand Palais in Paris, entitled 'Noir et Blanc: une ésthétique de la photographie'.
Galerie Miranda
Galerie Miranda, founded in 2018 by French-Australian Miranda Salt, is dedicated to photography. It offers exhibitions of artists recognized in their own countries but rarely exhibited in France or in Europe. Galerie Miranda inaugurated its programme on 8 March 2018, International Women's Day, with a first cycle of exhibitions dedicated to women artists with exceptional careers: Jo Ann Callis Nancy Wilson-Pajic, Marina Berio and Ellen Carey.
