As a multidisciplinary artist, Marleen Sleeuwits is particularly sensitive to the alienating quality of seemingly innocuous everyday spaces. At the heart of her work is the investigation of impersonal environments - places that could be anywhere and nowhere - such as vacant airport areas, empty hotel corridors or empty rooms in office buildings. Gradually, Marleen’s artistic practice has developed from simply photographing these areas to intervening in them beforehand, reusing the inherent characteristics and materials of the place. In doing so, she questions notions of accessibility, material, design, usability and, above all, recognition.
Interiors, presented at a ppr oc he, is an overview of Marleen Sleeuwits’ latest work, in which she works across disciplines and plays with our 2D and 3D perception. As we scan the artist’s works for clues, we feel we are coming to grips with the image - only to be completely lost again in dizzying and repetitive inversions. Her art hijacks the visual element of reality, plays with scale and creates optical illusions. Capturing her own revisited scenographies, she challenges the role of photographer, sculptor, architect or painter.
In 2001 Marleen Sleeuwits obtained a degree in Photography from the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague and a Master’s degree in the same field from the AKV|St. Joost in Breda in 2005. Since then she has exhibited at the Kunsthal in Rotterdam, the ScotiaBank Contact Photo Festival in Toronto, the Museum für Konkrete Kunst in Ingelstadt, the Dutch Photo Museum in Rotterdam, FOAM in Amsterdam and the Museo Diocesano in Milan. Marleen’s work has won the Meijburg Art Commission and been nominated for the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize and the Rome Prize.

Galerie Bart is a contemporary art gallery based in Amsterdam with a focus on both established and young artists who have graduated in the Netherlands, excelling through their innovative craftsmanship.
