Angyalföld : angel dust
John Chiara is a photographer whose artistic practice is developed with the photographic medium itself: “the subject of my work is photography itself... (and) its manifestation through its technical possibilities. John Chiara is interested in urban, suburban and rural landscapes that are without apparent identity. He looks for places that are “interstices...places we walk past without seeing them.” John Chiara’s giant cameras are transported by trailer to the shooting locations. Made by the artist himself, their design allows him to simultaneously photograph and exhibit his images, which develop directly on paper cut into large, often irregularly shaped pieces. The XXL format and the 18th century technology force the artist to leave room for chance. During the exposure time, Chiara works with his hands on the passage of light through the lens, creating temporal pauses and physical filters that modify the temperature and color spectrum, as in a classic darkroom. Each of John Chiara’s works is unique.
The series presented at a ppr oc he was made in 2019. John Chiara, then in residence at the Art Factory in Budapest, chose to photograph the neighborhood of Angyalföld, whose name translates as angel dust. The negative images he made there capture hybrid architecture composed of buildings from different eras amidst billboards, electric wires and trees.
A 2004 graduate of the California College of the Arts’ photography program, in 2015 John Chiara was one of seven artists selected for the exhibition Light, Paper, Process: Reinventing Photography at the J. Paul Getty Museum. John Chiara’s work is now in prestigious collections including the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the George Eastman Museum, Rochester; and the Harry Ransom Center, Texas.
Galerie Miranda
The Miranda Gallery, founded in 2018 by Franco-Australian, Miranda Salt, is dedicated to photography. It offers exhibitions of artists who are recognized in their countries but not widely exhibited in France or Europe. Galerie Miranda inaugurated its programming on 8 March 2018, International Women’s Day, with a first cycle of exhibitions dedicated to women artists with exceptional careers: Jo Ann Callis, Nancy Wilson-Pajic, Marina Berio and Ellen Carey.
