Ciel Jaune

Film and analog photography are at the heart of Yasmina Benabderrahmane’s experimental approach. Her always-instinctive artistic practice is halfway between a documentary and filmed diary. Through film, but also through sound, she collects and probes the visible world and the people she loves and who surround her. Yasmina focuses on fragments and on invisible matter to create a body of still or moving images. Thanks to a process of chemical alteration called “mordanting”, an inert gnawed mass comes to life on the surface of a photograph in a developing bath. An anthropomorphic landscape appears and the film’s coating is revealed. The epidermal surface is the theatre of a sensory, visual and sound experience.

Following the discovery of a box of negatives, Yasmina Benabderrahmane revealed the fictitious and enigmatic results of a personal investigation, in pursuit of unknown figures that appeared on the film during its development. The series Ciel Jaune, whose abstract works are the result of going back and forth from the state of negatives, which are scanned, then flashed and redeveloped. In the video Chair Pelliculaire, the artist, like a true alchemist, transforms the film’s deterioration with precision and with the help of chemicals, to give it a second life.

Yasmina Benabderrahmane was selected for the 54th Montrouge Salon d’Art Contemporain in 2009, and for the Salon de la Jeune Création, 2013. She is a graduate of the Beaux-arts de Paris — ENSBA (2009) and of the Fresnoy — Studio National des Arts Contemporains, Tourcoing (2015). She won the Jeune Création du Bal prize with Adagp in 2019, which led to a solo exhibition La Bête, un conte moderne de Yasmina Benabderrahmane at the Bal in Paris in 2020, co-curated by Adrien Genoudet and Diane Dufour, and an artist’s edition co-created and co-produced with Morgan Crowcroft-Brown and Mickaël Mack for Mack_Books Publishings / BAL Books. In 2021, she participated in FE21 — Fotografia Europea 21 at Reggio Emilia in Italy and LA NUU 21, 7th — International Festival of Photography of Rubí in Barcelona, Spain.
